We were very fortunate to be offered this delightful large trinket box by an acquaintance that has been aware of our work to revitalise the old and unloved, for some time.
Having received a considerable amount of attention, the sun-bleached lid has recovered much of its former glory, but remains slightly matt in finish. We have replaced the rotten fabric and sympathetically relined the base in a lovely gold silk. We have also remained faithful to William Comyns, leaving the lid uncovered to allow the sunlight to light up the wonderful hues in the lid.

ConditionOverall, this lightly revitalised trinket box is in good condition. As mentioned, the lid remains a little matt, but with the fine silver work to the lid, we held the view this was preferable to a full refinishing which always has the potential to damage inlaid work.
The silverwork is relatively good reflecting its age, just a few small dinks. The legs are solid and intact, as is the base of the piece. There are some very small abrasions to the rim of the shell lid and one of the fine pins is absent.
In summary, this is a good solid trinket box that retains the qualities of a William Comyns gem, with all the potential to offer another hundred years of reliable service.
