Item Details
These extremely rare marriage cum wager cups may not be unique but they are certainly unusual. .
Each base is a good weight, silver gilt lined oval cup made by Joseph Rodgers and assayed in Sheffield in 1905. In addition each cup is also marked with a Maltese Cross above a six pointed star, encapsulated in a waisted shield, located adjacent to the normal makers mark of an upper case 'Jr'.
What makes these cups unusual is that they are accompanied by demountable Wmf marked Ep wager cups, one of which is gilt lined, the other not.
It seems most likely that the cups were modelled for these silver specific bases, on the basis that, in combination they could be used for a form of gaming requiring wager cups.
